Touching Miami with Love

Updated 11/12/2007

We are excited about all that God is doing in Miami. We invite you to come join us in being the presence of Christ to the poorest community in Florida in the third poorest city in the country.

Due to the needs of the community, we expanded our day camp this past summer to two locations and extended the length of camp an additional two weeks.  We had 12 teams work along side us ministering in the Overtown community.  We are starting to book teams for next summer and need your help as we step out in faith that God will provide for the needs of our community.

Your week in Miami will start with serving the homeless community through leading our Downtown Mission. You will have the opportunity to lead worship, preach, assist in providing clothing, and serving a meal. The remainder of the week your group will have the opportunity to love on children and their parents through our summer day camp, a community BBQ, an adopt a street clean-up and a movie for the homeless community.

Our summer programs run for six weeks from June 22nd through August 1st (Sunday's through Friday's). We are able to utilize groups that vary in sizes from 10 to 60 volunteers.  Call or email Angel Pittman today, at (305) 416-0435 extension 205 or angel@touchingmiamiwithlove.org, to reserve the space for your youth or adult mission teams and for all your summer camp questions!

Updated 1/15/2007

Consider a summer mission trip to serve in Miami, FL. The week is packed with a variety of activities to challenge your mission group, foster conversations and deepen their relationship with God. Skills required: the willingness and heart to serve in the inner city of Miami. Groups will be working with the homeless of downtown Miami; with an Overtown community garden; parents in the community and run a summer camp for children (K-5).

The group will begin their ministry week by working with the homeless of Miami at the Downtown Mission. This is an alternative church for everyone, homeless and non-homeless. The group will lead worship, assist in the clothing closet, preach (leader of the group), fellowship with the congregation and prepare meals to distribute.

Groups are responsible for completely running a came from 10-1 Monday-Thursday. They are to come prepared to teach a character education class, lead a craft period and facilitate recreational activities. The camp is divided into two different camps. One camp works only with K-2 graders while the other camp works with 3-5 graders. Depending on the size of the group, they will either lead only one camp or both. On Friday the group will accompany the children on a field trip.

In the afternoon and evenings, other ministry events will be ready for the group to participate such as: local gardening project; neighborhood BBQ cookout; movie night for the homeless and a historic tour of Overtown/Downtown Miami.

The summer programs run for six weeks and groups sizes 10-60 volunteers, youth or adults, are welcome. Contact Touching Miami with Love for more information at http://www.touchingmiamiwithlove.org/.

Global Slave Trade is Local

Updated 10/23/2007

International Change Agent, David Batstone, visits Raleigh, NC
One of the nation's most horrendous crimes rarely gets noticed, but David Batstone hopes to change that. He has taken a leave of absence from teaching duties at the University of San Francisco to launch a nationwide tour drawing attention to the global slave trade. Think human trafficking is not a problem in North Carolina? Think again. Modern day slavery has been found recently in Apex, Raleigh, and Charlotte.
Batstone, as seen on CBS, will be speaking at 7:30PM Thursday, November 8 at Vintage 21 in Raleigh, NC. Local group, Jubilee, is working with the Not For Sale Campaign to raise awareness and take action against this injustice both locally and internationally.
"Trafficking in persons is a modern-day form of slavery, a new type of global slave trade. Perpetrators prey on the most weak among us, primarily women and children, for profit and gain. They lure victims into involuntary servitude and sexual slavery. Today we are again called by conscience to end the debasement of our fellow men and women." -- Condoleezza Rice, 2007 Tip Report
Batstone understands that this is "the invisible crime," and he admits that he was dumbfounded when he first discovered that it was happening right in front of him. "It was at one of my favorite restaurants," he said. The owner of the restaurant was forcing illegal aliens to work by threatening to report them to immigration officials. My shock turned into a consuming passion that took me around the world to learn more about how slavery flourishes in the shadows," Batstone said.
Through the Not for Sale Campaign, Batstone desires to mobilize churches, the police force, government agencies, and community groups with tools to combat this heinous crime. He brings a multi-media presentation including Moby, Five for Fighting, Switch Foot, Cold War Kids, Darryl Hannah and other celebrities to help raise awareness and promote partnerships.
Batstone's appearance is free. He's looking for a different sort of payment. "You save one child, one person from slavery and the feeling of accomplishment is really something," he said. "It's the satisfaction and gratification of seeing one person go free."

Church Unusual

Updated 9/26/2007

A Missional coffee house called Jump'n Java Cafe is located at 2945 S. Miami Blvd #119, Durham NC.  It's intent is to build relationships with folks in their 'third place', people who probably would never enter anything called or associated with church, and to do so in a manner where the principles of God's kingdom could none-the-less be experienced every day.

"I enjoy imagining and continually re-thinking a variety what if scenarios - particularly missional ones.  For instance, what if your whole family, all your friends, co-workers, and your neighbors could be introduced to the gospel?

"Awesome!", you say.  "That's every Christians hope".

But, what if this occurred without any of them ever entering a church, hearing a sermon, attending any church sponsored program or signing up for doctrinal 101 classes?  What if they - out in the work world - came into daily contact with an individual(s) who consistently treated them with respect, kindness, patience, compassion and joy?  What if they experienced kingdom principles long before they heard of the Kingdom's King?  What if they were the ones asking to know more rather than being told they needed to know more?   Stranger than fiction?  No.  All this actually should be happening every day, but is it?

For the purposes of this article - singling out the arena of outreach, what if we totally rethought the way we fulfill the command of Jesus?  What if we rethought his original outreach counsel - to go out to the lost sheep - and imagined, as an increasing number of current authors are noting,  that it might not translate into what we have been doing for centuries?" Fellowship of Emerites - Dubai, United Arab Emerites

Updated 8/22/2007

Fellowship of the Emirates is a non-denominational church founded in February 2006, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Who we are:
~ Until recently we met in a villa (house) and are now looking for another location, hopefully permanent.
~ Our average Friday (day of worship in Arab countries) attendance is 50 to 80.
~ Youth and children are an integral part of our worship and we place a strong emphasis on them.
~ We are currently lay led.
~ Eight or nine adults make up our Exec. Com. (board) and they are the ones who organize and direct our ministry.
~ Everyone in the church is considered a leader and most fill some leadership role.
~ We utilize DVDs from Fellowship of the Woodlands, Texas for our sermons.
Our vision:
~ This year we are focusing on beginning small group ministry that is relationship oriented.
~ We envision becoming a community center where adults, youth, and children can come and connect through common interests (such as sports, books, music, crafts, etc.) where relationships can be formed and people be drawn to Christ.
Our need:
~ We are looking for a three-month volunteer, working on a visitor's visa, who can preach on a weekly basis, help us develop our church programs, and flesh out our vision.
~ We need someone who has background/experience in this area, who will come and observe our ministry, and then make recommendations for its growth, tailoring it to our situation, and leading us in implementing them.
~ Possible candidates might be retired ministers or seminary professors/ students/interns, but not limited to these individuals.
What we will provide:
~ Air transportation to and from Dubai
~ Visitor's visa
~ Housing
~ Car
~ We cannot provide a salary, thus the need for a volunteer.

Updated 5/09/2007

The Belize Bible School Keeps Growing
The Baptist Bible School, now in its second year of operation, has enrolled a total of sixteen ongoing students.  For a small country whose total number of Baptist Churches related to the Belize Baptist Association compares to one of the mid-sized Baptist associations in North Carolina, this is a wonderful response. The individual students are doing quite well, too.  They come from many backgrounds and speak a variety of languages at home-- English, Spanish, Mopan Maya, Ketchi Maya, and Garifuna, but all do well in understanding their teachers who speak American English.

We want to thank the churches and individuals whose gifts large and small are making the school possible.  If you or your church would like to sponsor a particular student, let Bob Lamb know at rlamb12@carolina.rr.com  or call him at 704-434-9392.  He can tell you about the students and assign a particular person.  The cost per student per year is $1000.

Updated 1/15/2007

Baptist Bible School of Belize trains leaders to reach their country for Christ:

The Baptist pastors and other church leaders in Belize need to have theological training so as to serve their churches well and to lead powerfully in reaching Belize for Christ. In the past, some pastors had been able to attend a school in Barbados and others had attended the Spanish speaking seminary in Honduras. Now that these schools have been closed, however, they have nowhere to turn for a theological education from a solid Baptist perspective.

Growing out of the work of Ray Howell, Dennis Hipp, and others, The Baptist Bible School of Belize was begun in January of 2006 in cooperation with Antolino Flores, the Executive Secretary/Treasure of the Baptist Association of Belize. Bob Lamb, Dean Emeritus of the School of Divinity at Gardner-Webb University, is the United States Coordinator.

The school offers a Certificate in Pastoral Ministry based on the completion of 20 courses and a Christian Worker's Certificate with requires completion of 10 courses. The curriculum is offered through the External Studies Program of Cape Town Baptist Seminary in South Africa which is accredited by the Department of Education of South Africa.

To attend, the pastors give up their work for a week three times a year and spend many hours studying before returning for tests which are given at the beginning of each new week of study. They also pay the cost of their transportation.

We encourage CBFNC churches and individuals to consider providing a scholarship for a pastor to cover the cost of a Pastoral Ministries Certificate. The cost for all 20 courses is $3,000 or $1,000 a year. Any contributions should be made payable to CBFNC and clearly marked as scholarship funds for the Belize Pastor School. Also, construction teams, dental and medical teams, conducting VBS or Backyard Bible clubs are all possibilities this summer. For more information on this exciting work in Belize, visit the Belize mission page.

Hurricane Katrina

Pearlington, MS

Updated 4/10/2007

Since Katrina hit Pearlington, MS, the work there has been a task of love first, helping to get folks food and clean water, then into tents and finally into FEMA trailers. One church had the idea to build one house for one family. There were so many volunteers from other locales doing the work that the original church could not take full credit. Other houses were started, and with volunteer labor and funding from American Baptist Churches and Cooperative Baptist Churches 20 houses have been built or rebuilt, with others in the planning stage. Almost 100 people are now in real homes, thanks to your efforts! Volunteers are still needed - contact pearlingtonvolunteercenter@gmail.com to schedule a trip.

Slidell, LA

Updated 2/20/2007

By Carla Wynn, CBF Communications
Just south of Lacombe in New Orleans, nearly 270 Fellowship volunteers renovated five churches and four pastor's houses. Now that the Fellowship's six-month project in New Orleans concluded Dec. 31, volunteers are needed for restorative efforts in Lacombe and nearby Slidell, La. More than 200 volunteers are scheduled to come in 2007.

"We are now shifting our focus back to the northern shore of Lake Pontchartrain, especially in Slidell, where floodwaters ran thousands out of their homes," said Doster. "CBF will continue our ministry here so long as we have volunteers willing to let God use them to ease human suffering. As with CBF's continued efforts in post-tsunami Southeast Asia, the work goes on right here in post-Katrina Southeast Louisiana."

For more on CBF of Louisiana's disaster response and how to volunteer, contact Reid Doster at reid_doster@hotmail.com or (985) 222-6900. For more on the Fellowship's disaster response, visit www.thefellowship.info/disaster.

Ukraine

Updated 1/15/2007

The thousand of orphan children are still on the streets of Kiev, but thankfully CBFNC has taken the plight of these children as one of our prime mission goals. Today thanks to CBFNC church teams that have gone to the Ukraine and the financial gifts of our churches, The Village of Hope is now a reality. We have parents in The Lighthouse and children that were on the streets are now being cared for in every way possible. Also we have field personnel Gennady and Mina Podgaisky working with the children on the streets of Kiev. We have a wonderful working relationship with a strong Baptist church in Bucha (a suburb of Kiev) and their pastor Dr. Victor Kulbich and a bonding with churches in Holland and Germany.

Construction teams for renovations will be going full steam this summer. In addition, there are opportunities to work with Mina Podgaisky after the first week in August on specific projects such as sponsoring a sewing class or working with the children. If you would like more information of The Village of Hope, visit the Ukraine mission page.

Passport Camp - Youth Mission Trips

Updated 2/8/07

Passport, Inc. is an independent, nonprofit organization begun in 1993. It is the first Christian youth camp to combine a week of camp with a hands on mission project. It was originally created for the church that didn't have the budget or people power to pull off both experiences in one summer. What sets them apart is that their students leave the campus for 3 hours each day to participate in local mission projects. They do everything from painting the home of a senior citizen to leading day camp for kids with the local YWCA. Passport campers put in over 60,000 hours of community service each summer - all in the name of Christ. To learn more, visit
http://www.passportcamps.org/.
Also, Mission Exchange is a Passport program sponsored by CBF that matches your group with mission opportunities (that can be individualized) year round and provides you with the tools to organize your trip and prepare your team. Contact Marnie Fisher Ingram at marnie@passportcamps.org or call the CBF Dallas office at (972) 242-5977 or look for the MX link at http://www.passportcamps.org/.

Living Faith Ministry International, a non-denominational ministry, began with a Lebanese-American pastor, Chaouki Boulos, responding to a call from God that it was time to share Jesus in the Middle East in an open manner. Prior to then, Christians had been "sowing" and "watering" but in an underground manner.

Chaouki and a group of believers began in July 2000 in Beirut, Lebanon with Operation Antioch, a five-night, open-air Celebration with uplifting music and dynamic preaching. Christians from the US offered support, doing street evangelism, ministering in orphanages, developing a children's ministry, hosting basketball clinics and generally encouraging people in the local churches. Since July 2000, Celebrations have been held twice a year in Beirut. They've also held events in Syria, Egypt and Jordan. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, far above what anyone predicted, with churches of all denominations participating.

Ministries of relief and compassion to people in distress are ongoing and a new retreat center is being planned. For more information, visit www.operationantioch.com or email operationantioch@hotmail.com.

Faith Ministries - Mexico

Updated 1/15/2007

If you're looking for an out-of-the-country mission trip that is not too far away, visit Faith Ministries. Faith Ministry/Ministerio de Fe, Inc., is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the poorest of the poor in the colonias of Reynosa and Miguel Aleman in Mexico with their housing, medical, spiritual, educational, and other immediate needs.

"For all we need is faith working through love." Galatians 5:6 is the verse this ministry revolves around. Founded in 1994 in McAllen, TX, their vision is to complete five centers (which are comprised of church, clinic, and dorm) along the border in Mexico, where people continue to struggle in third world conditions. Two of the centers are complete, with a third now underway. There are many ways to get involved: sponsoring a child's education, helping to build a house, or coming to work in one of their medical clinics. Christian Flights International - Haiti

Updated 1/15/2007

Changing the world, a child at a time. Can you really make a difference in Haiti? If you ask the children of Ranquitte, Haiti, the answer is absolutely - yes! CFI is a cross-cultural, non-denominational community of believers supporting a mission located on a six-acre campus near Ranquitte, Haiti, a village in the north central mountains of that country. CFI now works with a second generation of Haitians being raised up to lead the local programs. It's all about giving our Haitian friends hope and future. The philosophy of CFI is to support, equip, and otherwise empower gifted Haitian leaders to teach, heal, train, and restore their own people and their own land. CFI is not an American organization set on achieving American goals and requiring an American presence. Americans and Haitians are partners in the overall effort. Summer mission trips are available. For further information, visit CFI on the web at http://www.christianflights.org/.

Angel Tree

Updated 1/15/2007

Angel Tree at Christmas is the perfect opportunity for you to begin a relationship with the children of incarcerated parents.

Help prisoner's children grown in their faith, strengthen their relationship with their parent, and fulfill God's purposes for their lives. Through Angel Tree, your church can welcome the children of prisoners in your community by providing them with Christmas gifts, given in love, on behalf of their incarcerated parent. Right now an estimated 2 million children have a parent in prison. When your church signs up for Angel Tree, you'll receive the names of children whose mom or dad in prison has personally filled out an application for their child and selected the general type of gifts they would like their child to receive. This truly is a ministry that benefits the children; a ministry of reconciliation for the "least of these." It leads to lives transformed by Christ.
